Most snoring is caused by the sufferer's lifestyle choices, including their diet, exercise regime and their alcohol consumption. By eating more nutritious foods, and losing your extra weight through diet and exercise, your body will have less fat putting pressure on your lungs. This can be a common cause of snoring. Additionally, consuming less alcohol can have a significant impact on how loudly you snore, especially if you stop drinking alcohol just before you go to sleep. Alcohol causes snoring because it relaxes your muscles in your throat, which are supposed to be working to keep your airway clear as you sleep.

However, training your body to maintain a side position as you go to sleep can also impact the likelihood of you snoring, since sleeping on your back means that you restrict your upper airways and breathe with your mouth instead of your nose.

Use a CPAP Machine

CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and can be used as a treatment for snorers. It involves sleeping with a mask over your nose and face, so that the air pushed through the mask can open up your airways and keep them open as you sleep. The air is pushed through the mask via the machine that is attached, so you will need to keep it next to you on your bedside table. This is considered one of the most effective treatments, but it can be difficult to adjust to, which is why an autoset CPAP is the best option as it automatically adjusts the amount of air pressure delivered to you as you sleep. For many, it can make using the CPAP machine feel more natural and comfortable.


Whilst medical procedures are the more dramatic option, they can be a vital last resort for many snorers. The most common surgical procedure to prevent snoring, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, involves cutting the tissues around your uvula in your throat so that the uvula stiffens and this prevents it from vibrating which is what causes snoring. Another procedure to prevent snoring is radiofrequency tissue ablation, which uses a low radiofrequency signal to shrink the tissue next to the uvula, palate or tongue. These procedures are performed under local anesthesia, and so you should consult your doctor who can refer you for these snoring solutions.
